Digital disruption and Australia’s cultural and natural history collections

With digital disruption sweeping many industry sectors in Australia, it is timely to consider its impact on the custodians of Australia’s cultural and natural history collections.  Australia’s galleries, libraries, museums and archives hold over 100 million objects and over 600 kilometres of archival material, a distributed national collection that is central to the story about Australia and its place in the world.

An Australian Centre for Broadband Innovation report just released by CSIRO, Challenges and opportunities for Australia’s Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums, has identified some of the profound challenges and opportunities to this sector in this new digital era.

Copies of the report can be found at CSIRO’s website or on the report website.  Museums Australia have become custodians of the report and are coordinating a sector wide response.
